PAU Reveals New & High Yielding Variety of Parmal Rice ‘PR-131’

The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana has produced 'PR 131,' a rice variety that is high yielding, lodging tolerant, and resistant to bacterial blight.

The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in Ludhiana has produced 'PR 131,' a rice variety that is high yielding, lodging tolerant, and resistant to bacterial blight.

The university said in a statement, “It matures in about 110 days after transplanting. It consists of long slender, clear translucent grains with high total and head rice recoveries. The variety resists the attack of all the 10 presently prevalent pathotypes of bacterial blight pathogen in the Punjab state.

The average paddy yield of this variety is 31.0 quintals per acre. This variety will prove very beneficial to the farmers on account of its higher paddy yield, medium maturity period, and disease resistance as well as to the traders due to its excellent milling quality characteristics.

PAU has produced a large number of seeds of this variety which is available at its research stations and seed farms located in Ladhowal, Naraingarh (Fatehgarh Sahib), Nabha, and Kapurthala, Krishi Vigyan Kendras, and Farmer Advisory Service Centres of PAU.”

The Farmers Fair, which has been held on the PAU campus in Ludhiana, Punjab, since 1967, attracts at least one lakh farmers over two days (bi-annually in March and September). Farmers come to the PAU campus from all around Punjab. 

Along with adjacent states like Haryana, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and others, to buy high-quality seeds and farm equipment, and learn about new agricultural technology during the two-day major fair event.
