The Agriculture department in Assam has set a target to register 5 lakh farmers under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) for ensuing Sali paddy till July 31.

Atul Bora, Agriculture Minister of Assam said that district Agricultural Officers of the State will have to take the responsibility to attain the target failing which the authority may take action against them.

Bora while addressing a 2-day State Level Orientation Training Programme on PM Fasal Bima Yojana at Assam Administrative Staff College said that farmers in the state faced hardship because of vagaries of weather like drought, flood, different pests & disease problems etc. resulting in loss of crop yield.

Few days back, Parshottam Rupala Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying said that the Centre would share the premium subsidy for PMFBY up to 90% for the North eastern states from the existing 50:50 sharing ratio.

PM Fasal Bima Yojana - a flagship programme of Central Government was introduced to provide financial support to the farmers suffering from crop damage due to unforeseen weather events.

Bora asked all the field level officials to work hard to accomplish the targeted goal.

The minister told that during his recent visit to New Delhi, he met Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Narendra Singh Tomar, who showed keen interest for development of Agriculture sector in Assam.

He thanked Tomar for sending officials from PMFBY cell to give training to officials of the State Agriculture Department. He said, "Proper utilization of fund leads to farmer’s prosperity & thereby helps in development of the State’s economy. Our officers should keep in mind to utilize Government money properly".

PMFBY was launched in the year 2016 with an aim to support production in agriculture by offering affordable crop insurance product to ensure comprehensive risk cover for crops against all non-preventable natural risks - starting from pre sowing till post harvest stage.
