The 38-year-old writer and filmmaker, Tahira Kashyap who has a large social media following, recently took to Instagram to share her harrowing experience of spending two days in the ICU after consuming bitter bottle gourd juice, which turned out to be poisonous. Tahira quipped that she suffered from bottle gourd toxicity, as they say, "too much of anything is never healthy."

Bottle gourd, also known as lauki, ghia, or dudhi in India, It is a nutrient-dense vegetable that has been linked to the prevention of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and liver disease. It is also low in cholesterol and can help you lose weight.

However, in recent years, there have been instances of potential poisoning from drinking bottle gourd juice, which resulted in severe vomiting and upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage (GI). Though this type of toxicity is exceedingly rare, with very few cases recorded. So, how can you determine whether your Bitter Gourd is safe to eat?
