Blood pressure should be balanced as both high blood pressure (High BP) and low blood pressure (Low BP) are harmful to your health.

Commonly used term for High blood pressure is hypertension. It can put you at a higher risk of heart disease whereas low blood pressure (hypotension) can lead to dizziness and also affect your heart health. Many of us are not aware of the exact causes of blood pressure fluctuations. However, there are various misconceptions or myths about blood pressure which stops individuals from following the right prevention steps.

1. Fluctuation in blood pressure is normal:

Many believe that fluctuation in blood pressure is normal. However, it is not true. If you have been ignoring changes in blood pressure then stop it now. Fluctuations in blood pressure can be a sign of some health condition. Therefore, it is important to get blood pressure numbers checked regularly. You can consult doctor if you face these fluctuations.  

2. High BP cannot be controlled:

It is a widely believed myth. High blood pressure can be treated effectively. Consult your doctor and follow a healthy diet and lifestyle. Do regular exercise, weight management, consumption of a healthy diet, stress control and quitting smoking are few steps to control blood pressure numbers.

3. Salt reduction can cure high blood pressure:

Please note that too much salt is bad for your blood pressure and kidneys. Cutting salt intake may help control blood pressure numbers. However, if you are only cutting back on salt then it is not going to help. It is important to adopt a healthy lifestyle to regulate blood pressure.

4. It is okay to quit treatment when symptoms are under control

People should not stop the treatment even if their BP is under control, unless your doctor advises to do so.

5. Consuming coffee is safe in low blood pressure:

Remember that drinking coffee in low blood pressure can elevate numbers for a while but it is a treatment for the condition. Keep a balance to it as too much caffeine is also harmful to health. However, if you are suffering from high blood pressure then you must strictly avoid caffeine consumption.
