One day before Diwali, lamps are lit for Yama. On the evening of Dhanteras, light a lamp outside the house at dusk. This lamp is lit for Yamraj. It is believed that by lighting the lamp of Yama, makes Lord Yamraj happy and provides protection from the premature death of family members.

Significance

It is said that once Lord Vishnu was coming to visit the dead land. Goddess Lakshmi also requested to walk with Lord Vishnu. Then Vishnu said that if you agree with what I say, I will take you along. Mother Lakshmi agreed to listen to Lord Vishnu and came to the ground with Lord Vishnu. After a while, Lord Vishnu reached a place and said to Lakshmi that you stay here till I come. I am going towards the south and you don't come.

When Vishnu left, Lakshmi had a question in his mind that what is it like in the south direction that God himself went and refused to come to me. It is said that Lakshmi also followed Lord Vishnu. Ongoing further, Mother Lakshmi was shown a mustard field. Seeing the beautiful flowers of mustard, Mata was mesmerized and went ahead after doing her makeup with flowers. Going forward, Lakshmi broke sugarcane from a sugarcane field and started drinking juice.

Then Lord Vishnu comes there and gets angry on seeing Goddess Lakshmi. God told Mother that I had forbidden you from coming, but you did not listen to me and committed the crime of stealing the farmer.

Now you serve this farmer for twelve years in the crime of crime. Saying this, God left them and went to Kshirsagar. Then Lakshmi started living in the house of that poor farmer.

One day Lakshmi made an idol of her and told the wife of that farmer that you should bathe and worship this Goddess Lakshmi made by me first. Only then does any other work, by doing this you will get what you ask for. The farmer's wife did the same. Due to the blessings of Mother Lakshmi, there was no lack of anything in the farmer's house. The farmer spent 12 years happily. After the completion of 12 years, Lakshmi agreed to go.

When Vishnu came to take Mata Lakshmi, the farmer refused to send her. Then God told the farmer that nobody wants to let them go, but their nature is fickle and it does not stay anywhere. Could not stop them very big. He was cursed by me so was serving you for twelve years. Now the service time is over. The farmer insisted that he would not let Lakshmi go.

Then mother Lakshmi said to the farmer that if you want to stop me at your house, tomorrow is thirteen. You should clean your house and light a lamp of ghee at night. Do my worship in the evening and keep the money for me in a copper urn, I will reside in that urn. I will not be visible to you during the puja, but I will not leave your house for one year from worship. The farmer duly worshipped Goddess Lakshmi the next day and as a result, his house was filled with money. Because of this, Goddess Lakshmi was worshipped on the thirteen days every year.

May Goddess Lakshmi and Dhan Kuber Maharaj bless your business and May you rise above all challenges Happy Dhanteras 2020!
