CNG prices in the national capital were increased by 2.50 per kg and piped cooking gas prices by 4.25 per unit on Thursday, reaching new highs due to rising raw material costs. According to the information posted on the website of Indraprastha Gas Ltd (IGL), the company that sells CNG and piped cooking gas in the national capital and surrounding areas, CNG now costs 71.61 per kilogram, up from 69.11 per kilogram. This is the 11th price increase since March 7, and the third this month.

In addition, the cost of gas piped to household kitchens, known as piped natural gas (PNG), was increased by 4.25 per cubic meter to 45.86 per SCM.

Since October of last year, when domestic and international gas prices began to rise as economies throughout the world recovered from the pandemic-induced slowdown, city gas distributors have been increasing prices regularly. Prices increased by 8.74 per kilogram in the last three months of 2021, and there has been a constant increase of roughly 50 paise per kilogram practically every week since January.

After the government more than doubled the price of natural gas to USD 6.1 per million British thermal units on April 1, the rates have risen. When natural gas is compressed, it creates compressed natural gas (CNG) for use in automobiles. For cooking and other functions, the same gas is piped into homes and businesses.

Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) hiked the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) in Mumbai from 5 per kilogramme to 72 per kilogramme on Wednesday. It also increased the price of PNG by 4.50%, to 45.50 per SCM.

Prices differ from city to city due to the impact of local taxes such as VAT. CNG costs have risen after a 10-cent increase in petrol and diesel prices in 16 days and a 50-cent increase in cooking gas LPG rates.

On March 22, a 137-day price freeze in petrol and diesel came to an end. In the national capital, the price of a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder was raised to 949.50 on the same day. LPG prices have reached Rs 1,000 per cylinder in some areas. For the past eight days, petrol and diesel prices have remained unchanged. The most recent price change occurred on April 6.
