Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), launched the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute’s (CSIR-CMERI) Electric Tiller in Durgapur. This innovative technology aims to transform the agricultural landscape for small and marginal farmers, who represent over 80% of India’s farming community.

Revolutionizing Small-Scale Farming

The Electric Tiller is designed with the specific needs of farmers owning less than 2 hectares of land in mind. These farmers often struggle with high operational costs and inefficient machinery. The Electric Tiller offers a cost-effective solution, potentially reducing operational expenses by up to 85%. This substantial cost saving is poised to alleviate financial burdens and improve the livelihoods of countless small-scale farmers across the nation.

Environmentally Friendly and User-Centric Design

A standout feature of the Electric Tiller is its commitment to environmental sustainability. Unlike traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) tillers, the Electric Tiller produces zero exhaust emissions, contributing to India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions. The machine operates quietly and significantly reduces hand-arm vibration, ensuring a comfortable experience for users.

The Electric Tiller supports multiple charging options, including AC and Solar DC charging, promoting the use of renewable energy sources in agriculture. Its user-friendly design includes battery pack swapping, allowing for uninterrupted work sessions, thereby enhancing overall productivity.

Versatility and Advanced Functionality

The Electric Tiller’s versatility is another key highlight. It integrates seamlessly with various standard agricultural attachments such as ridgers, ploughs, iron wheels, and cultivators. Additionally, it comes equipped with a 2-inch water pump and a trolley attachment capable of carrying up to 500 kg, making it a multifaceted tool for diverse farming activities.

Enhanced with electronic controls and ergonomic handling, the Electric Tiller ensures operators can navigate fields with ease, minimizing fatigue and maximizing efficiency. Its advanced torque and field efficiency further reinforce its suitability for a wide range of agricultural tasks.

The unveiling of the Electric Tiller by CSIR-CMERI marks a significant milestone in the development of agricultural machinery. By providing a sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective solution tailored to the needs of small and marginal farmers, this innovation holds the promise of transforming farming practices across India.
