The adoption of modern and smart farming technologies in India is gaining momentum, propelled by various factors such as socioeconomic conditions, geographical considerations, and the types of crops cultivated. The Government of India is actively supporting and encouraging the integration of innovative farming practices throughout the country.

Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization

Under the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization, the government promotes the use of modern machines, including cutting-edge tools like kisan drones. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and productivity in the agriculture sector, aligning with the government's commitment to the welfare of farmers.

Digital Agriculture Projects and Emerging Technologies

The National e-Governance Plan for Agriculture (NeGPA) is playing a pivotal role in fostering digital agriculture projects. State Governments receive funding under this program to implement projects utilizing emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), Internet of Things (IoT), and Blockchain. These technologies are revolutionizing farming practices, making them more efficient and sustainable.

Innovation and Agri-Entrepreneurship Development

The Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY-RAFTAAR) launched the "Innovation and Agri-Entrepreneurship Development" component in 2018-19. This initiative aims to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship in agriculture by providing financial support to start-ups. Start-ups are encouraged to leverage innovative technologies to address challenges faced by the agriculture sector, contributing to its overall growth and resilience.

Per Drop More Crop - Micro Irrigation for Water Efficiency

The implementation of the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) focuses on enhancing water use efficiency at the farm level. Micro Irrigation, including Drip and Sprinkler Irrigation Systems, is instrumental in water conservation, reducing fertilizer usage, labor expenses, and other input costs. Recent evaluation studies underscore the relevance of Micro Irrigation in achieving national priorities such as improved water use efficiency, enhanced crop productivity, and better quality of agricultural products.

Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) - A Hub for Agricultural Innovation

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research is actively implementing the Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) scheme across different states. KVKs serve as essential hubs for supporting farmers in adopting innovative farming techniques developed by the National Agricultural Research Systems. These centers conduct on-farm testing, frontline demonstrations, and capacity development activities to empower farmers with the latest knowledge and skills.

Building Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for Agriculture

In the budget announcement for the year 2023-24, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare unveiled initiatives to build Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) for agriculture. These initiatives aim to create an open-source, open-standard, and interoperable public good, providing farmers across the country with access to technology and information. The focus is on farmer-centric solutions through various digital initiatives, ensuring the agricultural sector's sustainable growth.
