Good News: Pakistan Introduces Sugar-Free Mangoes for Diabetics

Pakistan has started selling sugar free mango varieties and the good news is that this variety is suitable for people with diabetes.

Pakistan has started selling sugar free mango varieties and the good news is that this variety is suitable for people with diabetes.

Mango is a fruit, which is usually high in sugar levels has been scientifically modified by an expert at a private cultural farm, ‘M H Panhwar Farms’ in Sindh’s Tando Allahyar.  

There are three varieties of such mangoes and these are Glenn, Keitt and Sonaro. These varieties are now available and the sugar level of these mangoes ranges between 4 percent to 6 percent.

A mango expert Ghulam Sarwar (who is also nephew of Panhwar) said, “The government of Pakistan had conferred Sitara-e-Imtiaz on Panhwar for his research related to fruits including banana and mangoes. After his death, I continued his work and carried out the modification after importing different genres of mangoes (from foreign countries) to test its growth in this atmosphere and soil”.  

Sarwar informed that this project was being run on a personal level, without any kind of assistance from the government. He also said that his technique aimed at improving the shelf life of fruit, to control sugar level for diabetes and also to improve the production to introduce the new varieties.

The mango expert further said that Keitt variety of mango has the lowest sugar level, which is upto 4.7% while the other varieties such as Glenn and Sonaro have sugar level of upto 5.6% and 6% respectively. The mango varieties are priced at Rs 150 per kg in the markets of Pakistan.
