As India faces rising temperatures, the Ministry of Ayush has initiated a nationwide awareness campaign aimed at educating citizens about heatwave prevention. In response to advisories from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Ayush institutions across the country are actively conducting sensitization programs, distributing educational materials, and promoting traditional wellness practices to protect public health.

The Jamnagar-based Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) has taken proactive measures to protect local communities from extreme heat. On March 20, 2025, the institute organized an awareness program at its Outpatient Department (OPD), where educational pamphlets were distributed to patients and visitors.

At the Regional Ayurveda Research Institute (RARI) in Ahmedabad, Dr. Jayprakash Ram conducted an engaging session on "Heatwave Awareness: Knowledge, Prevention, and Treatment," drawing active participation from OPD patients, families, and staff.

In Jhajjar, Dr. Preeti from the Central Research Institute of Yoga & Naturopathy highlighted the benefits of Yoga and Naturopathy for managing heat stress, focusing on cooling asanas, pranayama, and herbal remedies.

Additionally, the Ayush Vertical under the Director General of Health Services has issued expert-backed guidelines, offering practical tips to ensure public safety during extreme heat conditions.

Recommended Do’s for Heatwave Protection

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, buttermilk, coconut water, and fruit juices to maintain body fluid levels.

  • Use Cooling Beverages: Incorporate natural drinks like lemon water and herbal infusions with khus, jeera, and coriander to lower body temperature.

  • Avoid Direct Sun Exposure: Use umbrellas, hats, or stay indoors during peak heat hours (12 PM – 3 PM).

  • Opt for Light Meals: Consume easily digestible, non-greasy foods to prevent excessive body heat.

  • Wear Comfortable Clothing: Loose, full-sleeved cotton outfits help protect against sun exposure.

  • Include Cooling Foods: Add hydrating fruits like watermelon, grapes, cucumber, and muskmelon to your diet.

  • Utilize Ayurvedic Remedies: Applying sandalwood or vetiver-based pastes can help cool the body naturally.

  • Take a Midday Nap: Resting during the hottest hours of the day can help prevent heat exhaustion.

Crucial Don’ts to Prevent Heat-Related Illnesses

  • Avoid stepping out during peak heat hours unless necessary.

  • Refrain from strenuous outdoor activities in the afternoon.

  • Do not walk barefoot on hot surfaces to prevent burns.

  • Avoid cooking in poorly ventilated spaces during the hottest hours.

  • Limit alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and carbonated beverages, as they cause dehydration.

  • Never leave children or pets inside parked vehicles, as interior temperatures can rise dangerously high.

With heatwaves becoming more frequent across India, proactive initiatives are providing citizens with essential knowledge and tools to stay safe. By merging traditional wisdom with modern science, these efforts highlight the importance of preventive measures.
