Cyclone Amphan has caused so much destruction in Kolkata. Almost everything took a hit after the cyclone. The super-cyclone has also left battered trees on the streets. Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has taken this amazing initiative to plant numerous saplings and restoring uprooted trees. This could be the largest restoration drive ever.

The super-cyclone Amphan literally devastated everything that has come in its way. It uprooted many trees and destroyed many houses. After the cyclone was over, the green cover of Kolkata was substantially reduced and it could really use a restoration drive. KMC has finally came to the rescue and conducted West Bengal’s largest plantation drive. With the aim of ‘Green Kolkata’ they planted & restored over a 1000 trees all over the city.

On World Environment Day, the initiative was launched & it aim was only to plant trees in the city. It has now expanded to restoring of trees that suffered due to cyclone. 15000 trees have been uprooted & 500 of them have been identified by KMC which can be re-planted. Until now, 70 of them have been salvaged.

To restore its ‘Green Cover’, Bengal aims to plant 50000 trees in and around the city making it the Biggest Plantation drive ever in the history of Bengal. KMC has also urged to plant as many trees as possible to the police & general public to maintain the natural balance.

The process of restoration & refining is not easy & hard work is required. The roots have to be cleaned of fungal infection, branches have to be trimmed & support have to be provided to grow. Monsoon is the current challenge for the restoration process and Insecticides, Pesticides & proper water supply will be provided to the restored trees. The special committee formed have already started their efforts.
