Due to the PM Awas Yojana (PMAY) timetable in metropolitan areas exceeding the intended time frame, the government is planning to extend the scheme till March 2024 in order to finish the construction of authorized residences.

The PMAY, a project to provide pucca houses to every family in urban areas, was begun in June 2015, with a target of March 2022, set by the government. However, due to increased demand from states, the completion of construction projects may now take longer, according to sources.

According to official data, under this flagship project, the Centre has sanctioned nearly 1.23 crore dwellings, of which roughly 98.4 lakh have been grounded, indicating that building has begun. 58.7 lakh dwellings have been handed over to recipients or completed.

In comparison to the entire sanction of 17.6 lakh dwellings, Uttar Pradesh has made the most progress among all states, having completed 10 houses.

Gujarat has completed or delivered 7.3 lakh dwellings, followed by Maharashtra (6.7 lakh) and Madhya Pradesh (just over 5 lakh apiece). 4.7 lakh similar residences have been completed in Tamil Nadu.

The cabinet approved the extension of the rural segment of the housing plan, known as PMAY-Gramin, from March 2021 to March 2024 in December last year.

According to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs data from 2019, it takes an average of 114 days to build a house under this scheme. The PMAY-G scheme has already resulted in the construction of 1.26 crore dwellings across India.

A beneficiary is granted a 100 percent grant of Rs 1.20 lakhs in plain areas and Rs 1.30 lakhs in hilly states, north-eastern states, hard areas, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh, among other places, to construct a pucca house under the PMAY-G. The minimum size of the dwellings that will be developed under the PMAY-G project is 25 square meters.
