World Veterinary Day: Let’s Appreciate Veterinarians for Caring Our Animal Wealth

Livestock constitutes the animal wealth in India. They play an important role in the Indian economy due to their contributions. Therefore the health of livestock is very crucial for the growth of any country. Veterinary doctor works on improving the health of animals thereby serves to protect them and the entire society. To honour their consistent work, each final Sunday within the month of April is well known as World Veterinary Day and every such day has a theme connected to it.

Historical Background:

Back in April of 1863 in Hamburg, Germany, a general meeting amongst doctors to discuss Rinderpest occurred. Professor John Gamgee extended the invite to veterinarians and professors of veterinary medicine from all over Europe. This meeting’s main goal was to discuss epizootic diseases and come up with standard rules for the cattle trade that all of Europe could follow.

This meeting became the first International Veterinary Congress (WVC). In Spain in 1959, at the 16th WVC, the World Veterinary Association was founded. The WVA’s mission is to provide global leadership for the veterinary profession and promote animal health and welfare and public health, through advocacy, education, and partnership.

Date & Theme: 2021

The World Veterinary Day 2021 falls on Sunday, April 25. The theme for World Veterinary Day 2021 is “Environmental safety for enhancing animal and human well being”.

Significance of World Veterinary Day:

  • We all love animals as they are selfless, caring, compassionate individuals who will stop at nothing to make sure your four-legged family member. Taking care of them should be our responsibility and veterinary doctors help us.

  • Veterinarians are the medical doctors who be sure that in regards to the properly beings of animals and monitor their correct checkup and coverings.

  • The world needs good and sensitive veterinary professionals as our animals need doctors and caretakers in these uncertain times of pandemic and global warming.

  • World Veterinary Day is a day to promote the veterinary profession and work on improving animal and human welfare, the environment, food safety, animal transport, and quarantine.  

World Veterinary Day is a chance for veterinary professionals and doctors to understand the issues faced by our livestock sectors and share their concepts and ideas at various international platforms and events. Veterinarians should also explore how to make an impact on animal health and welfare, so that the world can be saved from facing another deadly contagious.
