  • IMD Weather Update: Conditions of Cold Wave & Wet Spells

The cold wave and cold day conditions in northwest and central India are expected to progressively subside from Saturday (January 29), while a wet period is expected in northwest, east, and northeast India from February 2 to 4, according to the IMD. "During most regions of northwest and central India, no notable change in minimum temperatures is highly probable over the next 24 hours, with a steady rise of 4-6 degrees Celsius following," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warned.

  • Farmer’s Eye for Alternative Crop, Area Under Rabi Food Grain Drops by 2%

One of the most remarkable elements of this year's rabi sowing is that many farmers are opting for alternatives to growing food grains. As of Friday, the total area under food grain crops — wheat, rice, pulses, and coarse cereals — had decreased by 1.8 percent to 587.1 lakh hectares (lh) from 597.58 lh a year ago, indicating the start of a new trend. However, because to a 4% rise in the area under gramme, overall pulse cultivation is slightly higher than previous year (chana).

  • Gujarat Experiment: Reviving Defunct Borewells

A drawback of Indian agriculture is the erratic monsoon and failing bore wells, which force farmers to take drastic measures. In the midst of failing bore wells, the success of the Motirayan village in Mandvi taluka, Kachchch district, in resurrecting defunct bore wells and offering hope to farmers sounds like an elixir. Kachchh is India's second-largest district, containing 25% of Gujarat's land area. Drought is a recurrent occurrence in this district, which is known for its harsh climatic conditions and inconsistent monsoon.

  • Dealers Seeks MSP for Natural Rubber

The Indian Rubber Dealers Federation has asked for measures in the new Rubber (Promotion & Development) Bill 2022 to guarantee a minimum support price (MSP) for natural rubber, which is a recurring demand among growers. The federation's president, George Valy, said that a working group on the rubber sector had proposed to the Ministry of Agriculture in 2018 that it look into the potential of including natural rubber in the MSP system like other industrial raw commodities like cotton and jute.

  • Global Steel Production Marginally-Up in 2021

Based on output from 64 nations that submit to the World Steel Association (world steel), global crude steel production climbed 3.6 percent in 2021 to 1,191.9 million tonnes (mt), compared to a 0.9 percent dip in 2020. Global crude steel production fell to 1,864.0 mt in 2020, down from 1,880.92 mt in 2019. Despite a decline in Chinese production last year, worldwide production increased, with India maintaining its position as the world's second-largest crude steel producer. According to worldsteel's latest figures, crude steel output fell 3% to 157.8 mt in December compared to the same month a year ago, with China, Turkey, and Brazil being the primary drags.
