The greatness of 'Palangkanji' or porridge was well known to the older generation in Kerala.  'Palangkanji', which lost its glory for a long time, is now on the path of a comeback.

There are so many fans for this healthy food.  Similarly, you can find many shops in the towns and villages in Kerala that serve only 'Palangkanji'.  Such shops are always seen crowded.  If we look at what is the reason for the return of this dish, we will come to its astonishing nutritional values.

There was a time when ' Palangkanji ' was eaten at homes of the common people of Kerala.  It still persists in some homes.  'Palangkanji' is made by pouring water in a pot of rice left over from the previous night and keeping it till morning.  Those who drank ' Palangkanji 'with curd, green chillies, red onion, salt and pea curry will never forget its taste.

Experienced people say that if you drink ' Palangkanji ' in the morning, you will not feel any fatigue even if you have no other food till night.  There is no other food after the porridge to cool and relax the body.  It is a  relief for those who are in a vicious circle of lifestyle diseases.

This liquid food is rich in iron and calcium.  Selenium in it is very good for gout and other diseases affecting the heart.  It is said that even cancer can be prevented to some extent.

Due to its high fiber content, it helps in proper digestion and prevents constipation and ulcers.  The presence of antioxidants in gruel helps to brighten the skin and thereby maintain youthfulness.

This traditional food is rich in vitamins like B6 and B12, which are not found in many other foods. It is also good for lowering cholesterol and hypertension.  The manganese content in it is about 80%.  This element is very essential for the breakdown of fat in our body. It also contains magnesium which strengthens the bones.  Small onion mashed in porridge is known to be the best drink to have in summer. The new generation has to learn to drink it in summer to cool down the body.
