Olive Oil vs. Coconut Oil: Which one is Better?

In this article, we will be comparing Olive Oil with Coconut oil and find out which one is healthier for us to use.

With so many cooking oils variety being available in the market, it gets more difficult for us to choose. It also becomes more important for us to choose the right kind of cooking oil to receive maximum health benefits from it.  

Both Olive and Coconut oils are extracted from plant-based fats. They both are edible oils and are used in activities like cooking, baking and are also used in cosmetics. Extra Virgin olive oil is extracted from olives while coconut is extracted from the flesh of coconut fruit. Olive oil is liquid at room temperature whereas coconut oil is a soft solid and has butter-like consistency, however in temperatures above 25°C, it also becomes a thin clear liquid.  

Nutritional Value 

One teaspoon of coconut oil contains 120 calories. One teaspoon of extra virgin olive oil also contains 120 calories. On comparing the number of saturated fats in them, coconut oil has 13 g of it. On the other hand, olive oil has only about 2 g of if, which is way less and healthier than coconut oil. The amount of fats they provide us with is also the same

Coconut oil mostly leaves us with saturated fats in the form of molecules called MCT's (medium-chain triglycerides). High amounts of saturated fats are not good for the body and cause heart-related problems. Hence, it is advised to consume it in a moderate amount. 

Extra Virgin olive provides us with a good amount of anti-oxidants. Coconut oil also provides us with antioxidants, however, the amount they provide us with us is very low is also not as effective. 

Which one is healthier? 

When compared to coconut oil, olive oil is much healthier. Many reasons are contributing to this fact. Olive oil is considered a part of the Mediterranean diet. It is believed to be the healthiest diet, which is followed across the globe.

The Mediterranean diet is effective in reducing the risk of heart diseases, types of cancer, diabetes and it also helps in reducing weight. Another reason of olive oil being healthier is that it has good saturated fats, which includes monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats.
