Sukhjinder Singh, a farmer from Swal village near Sultanpur Lodhi, said, "Gobhi ne jimidaar rolte" (Cauliflower has shattered farmers). Farmers have begun ploughing their standing crops in response to the low price of cauliflower. Sukhjinder Singh also destroyed his 1.5-acre crop.

It also contains a lot of fibre. Cauliflower contains glucosinolates, a class of compounds. Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, Assam, Haryana, and Maharashtra are the major cauliflower-producing states.

Sukhjinder claimed he spent Rs 30,000 on one acre and received only Rs 3 per kg of cauliflower crop. "I grew it and I'm destroying it," an emotional Sukhjinder said.

Gajjan Singh, also from the same village, destroyed an acre of crop. "We bought hybrid seed, then a lot of money went into fertilizer and manure apart from transportation cost. 'Kuch nai bacheya,' he exclaimed. Cabbage growers faced the same issue. Growers said they were lucky to get Rs 2 for one kilogramme of cabbage.

The same is true for other vegetables such as potato and tomato. Farmers are concerned that if they continue to receive Rs 4-Rs 6 per kg, they will be forced to dump potatoes on roads.

Lakhvir Bassi of Kala Sanghian farms potatoes on 35 acres, 25 of which are under contract. "Based on the prices, it appears that I will be unable to pay the landowner. "I think I will have to take more loan now. I hope prices rise in the coming days," he wished.

According to Surinder Pal Singh, Secretary, Mandi Committee, Jalandhar, prices have plummeted since last month. "Tomato prices have dropped by half. A crate of 20-22 kg costs around Rs 300-400," he explained.
