With effect from June 16, new domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connections with national oil marketing corporations Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum will cost an extra 850, increasing the one-time security deposit households must pay towards the cylinder and pressure regulator.

The deposit for the cylinder (single bottle 14.2 kg connection) has been increased from 1,450 to 2,200, while the deposit for the pressure regulator has been increased from 150 to 250. It has been reduced to 2,000 (11,150) for the cylinder and 200 (100) for the pressure regulator for consumers in the northeastern states.

Households opting for double bottle connections (DBC) will be required to pay an extra security deposit for the second cylinder in the same amount. The security deposit (bearing by the energy companies) for Prime Minister Ujjwala Yojana clients remains unchanged.

The security deposit for clients registering for a 5-kg cylinder connection has also been increased by the oil companies. As a result, the penalties that households must pay in the event that their equipment is lost or damaged have been increased, as has the damage tariff.

Security Deposit for LPG:

The rise in the security deposit, which was last reviewed in October 2012 and is being implemented now due to rising steel prices, is certain to raise eyebrows, as it comes in the wake of a series of LPG price increases since December.

Despite the fact that the security deposit is refundable, many families pass the connection down through the generations. Even after switching to piped natural gas, many homes keep their LPG connections as a backup, according to sources.
